The eighties become a quieter, more settled time, opened by a kiss between our heroine's parents under the mistletoe in their Pageland retirement home. She has vowed never to marry again, but does when she meets her current husband. Her staff line up for a photo (she's the one making the rabbit ears, setting a good example, as usual, for the rest). She settles, albeit restlessly, her vagabond shoes uneasy by the doorstep, calling to her, but a new marriage, a house, while wanted, can also become anchors to one place. She spins in her own dust, plants her feet, stays for a while, but does buy a twenty-six foot sailboat).

Cousin Becky and her mother's first cousin Agnes meet at the Atlantic airport for a hug. Poignant now, since both have since died--Becky far too young, Agnes into her nineties.

Then home,  always home...Pageland, her beloved roots, wherever she goes or has been, her father's garden a symbol of stability and growth. Silver queen corn, fried green tomatoes, okra, melons, crowder peas, beans...the list goes on. Who could ask for a greater bounty than love, the rolling Carolina hills, and  food fresh from the garden??
