Hurricane

Crazy Al Johanssen surfs
through the hurricane,
dives under its rollers,
flies over sunken boats,
takes out a gull mid-air
with his strapped
on rubber angel wings.

He lives for the thrill,
knows his body will wind down
soon enough.

He stopped the chemo eight months ago,
grew back all of his hair,
rented a house with a pier to sit
on when the winds finally calm
and kids rush like hungry crabs
onto the sea-sucked beaches again.
