a certain blinding

hate burns his lips
sets fires to trees
scares off squirrels

he walks in ash
doesn't know color
until the sky bends
to kiss him

afraid--
he swallows his tongue
dresses in sack cloth
slashes his arms

he forgets blue skies
seedlings in spring
redbirds in flight
wildflowers in grass

char-black again
safe
